Trotting identity dies
Mr H. J. Hewson, who was badly injured dn an accident almost two years ago, died in Kaikoura last Saturday. Mr Hewson had a ■ long term on the executive of the Trotting Conference and for time he held office as South Island vice-president of the conference. He also held office for many years on the committee of the Kaikoura Trotting Club and was president for several terms. In addition he took an interest in civic affairs in the Kaikoura district. Mr Hewson bred arid raced many horses, several of them in partnership with his wife. The grand trotter, Ripcord, was probably the best horse he raced. Ripcord was one of the best horses of his gait 30 years ago and later, in spite of limited opportunities, sired a number of winners. Concord and Queen's Cord were two other good winners in the Hewson colours. Mr Hewson trained a number of winners and had a few raca drives.
