Queen honours TV man

The South African-born; writer and explorer, Laurens; van der Post, the ballet; dancer and choreographer.: Anton Dolin, and Michael, Levey, director of London’s; most important museum of; painting, the National Gal-[ lery, also received knight-, hoods. Several other figures from?, the arts and show business received awards. They included the novelist, Kingsley Amis, and the 80-year-pld comedian, Arthur Askey, both made Commanders of The Order of the British Empire (C.8.E.). Margaret Locktvood, one of Britain’s most popular film actresses in the 1940 s who starred in “Wicked Lady” and a 'score of other films, also became a C.8.E., along; with a Czechoslovak-born conductor, Vilem Tausky. The crime writer, Eric Ambler, Ronnie Scott, the jazz musician, and Sidonie Goosens, the harpist, were made Officers of the Order [of the British Empire. The only new Companion [of Honour, one of the high;
est awards, is the leading British abstract artist, Victor Pasmore. The list includes two new life peers. Sir Michael Swann, who has just retired as chairman of the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Sir Henry Benson, [adviser to the governor of the Bank of England. [ Ross Stainton, chairman iof the State-owned British [ Airways, and Maxwell Jo'seph. chairman of Grand Metropolitan, Ltd, the international hotel chain, both reiceived knighthoods. Sporting names in the honours list include Ron Greenwood, manager of the England football team, who is made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.8.E.) 'and the- England cricketer, Derek Underwood, who is made a Member of the Order.of the British Empire (M.8.E.). Dean Ronald Jasper of York, the chief architect of the Church of England’s modernised forms of prayer and worship, the so-called “alternative services,” was made a C.B.E.
