Life-saving selection
Six Canterbury juniors will represent Canterbury in the surf life-saving “test” against South Australia at Waikuku Beach on January 17. It will be a proud day for the host club, too, with three of its members in the team, which will be captained by its . top senior, Phillip Seal. The team has been chosen on the basis of one competitor, in both senior and junior grades, for each of six individual events. There will also be a taplin relay and perhaps a surf teams’ race. Otago will also compete. The Canterbury team chosen by Messrs J. A. Lee, P. J. Carpinter and B. C. J. Turpin, with the senior named first in each case, is:—
Ski: Geoff Walker (Waimairl) and Dean Waru (South Brighton); Malibu board: Dave Conder and Laurie McKeown (both Taylors Mistake); Surf race: John Dimick (New Brighton) and Grant Forbes (Waimairl); Belt race: Phillip Seal (captain) and Chris Ellis (both Waikuku Beach); Beach sprint: Gary Parker (Sumner) and Stephen Bolton (Waikuku Beach); Beach flags: Graeme Ellis (South Brighton) and Andrew Dorreen (South Brighton).
