Canty loses Brabin match outright
Canterbury lost outright to Central Districts by 165 runs in the Brabin Cup cricket tournament. Set 270 runs to win in 165 mins and the compulsory 20 overs, Canterbury was soon in trouble, losing its first wicket at three.
Only David Boyle, with a stylish 53, and Gerard McDonald, who made four, showed defiance. They shared a sixth-wicket stand of 49 and looked at ease against the Central Districts bowlers.
Boyle was unfortunate to be out when a ball from a pace bowler Dennis Stirling popped from a length and hit the handle of the bat. He was caught close in at silly mid-on.. -■ .... .. i
The remaining batsmen offered little resistance to the pace of Stirling and the left-arm spin of Graham McKenzie, who bowled 21 overs, 17 of which were
maidens, and finished’ with three for 12.
Canterbury plays Auckland in the last round and to win the Brabin Cup it needs many bonus, points and an outright victory and would need the Wellington and Central Districts game to be drawn.
