Rain strains bowls schedule

PA Auckland The weather was the only winner at the national bowls championships yesterday with the second day’s play in the singles ending in disarray. Torrential localised showers flooded some greens making play impossible, while in other parts of the city a full four rounds were eventually completed. At Remuera a section of two lifers completed only one round of play before being washed off the greens. At that stage Nick Unkovich (Okahu Bay), the 1979 champion, was still undefeated and was leading his second round game against Bob Elisaia (Matua). 17-13. Ivan Kostanich (Helensville), the champion in Auckland four years ago, had three good wins before rain washed out . play kt Onehunga. The rain came five minutes too early for Peter Bellis (Aramoho) at Okahu Bay. He was 20-10 up over Kevin Wing (Palmerston North) and will have to go back to the green this morning to obtain the final point. The uncertainty of bowls was never better demon-

strated than when Dave Baldwin (Paritutu) won his first game yesterday only to lose his two lives in the next two. He soundly defeated a former national representative, Neville Hill (Papatoetoe), 21-7, but then saw his hopes dashed by Robert Frelan (Morrinsville), 21-11, and Mark Marinovich (Mt Albert), 21-18. Meanwhile Hill won his next two games to remain in the competition with one life. ...

John Malcolm (Carlton), the 1978 champion, lost his first ’'game - yesterday, but still retains ‘ a life. Players with two lives, irrespective of how many rounds completed, are: O. Smith (Takapuna), L.' Traves (Hillcrest); B. Pridham (Edendale), I. Dicklson (K-aikorai). P. Allan (Westport KS.A.I, N.. Unkovich (Okahu Bay), R; Elisaia (Matua), K. Wing (Palmerston North), P.
