Close N.Z. chess battle
Only one point separates the 12 competitors in the premier grade of the New Zealand chess’-championships after the third round at Lincoln College yesterday. Three players have, scored two points, including one of the joint holders of the title, Ewen Green (Howick-Paku-ranga). ’ ' ‘ ■ The other joint leaders are Robert Smith (Waitemata) and Lev Aptekar (Wellington). Thev might well be joined by Peter Stuart (North Shore), who has an

Nokes (Canterbury); V.A. Small (Canterbury) drew with L. Aptekar (Wellington); O. Sarapu (North Shore) drew with 31. Levene (North Shore); J. Jackson (Nelson) drew with E. Green (HowickPakuranga);, B. Watson (North Shore) v. P. Stuart (North Shore), adjourned. Women’s championship.—J. Sievey (Otago) drew with A. Flower, (Wellington); ,1. Nokes '(Canterbury) v.-. E. Allen (Timani), adjourned.
