Albion qualifies in women’s softball
Albion overwhelmed Western Suburbs, 13-0, to win: the Christchurch final of the ; Bonds Fabric sponsored J women’s softball tournament: ; The New Zealand women’si inter-club champion shut outj i Suburbs with an impressive' batting display and superb: pitching by Cheryl Kempj who conceded only two hits I while striking out 12 of the j 17 Suburbs batters. However, her pitchingstatistics w.-e helped con-; siderably by rash batting by Suburbs. Even the bad pitches were chased foolishly. Suburbs had hits from ISharon Sutherland, who popI ped one over short stop, and Chris Timms. Both batters i were stranded on base in the third innings as Kemp re- i moved the necessary three. Albion led 10-0 after three: innings and was never, troubled. Bad judgment by the Suburbs outfielders, who I
failed to convert fly balls into catches, enabled the Albion batters to flourish. Danae Goosman batted ■ 1000 before she was replaced by Jan Vernal in the fifth innings. Christine Tew, the Canterbury captain, and' Kemp were also in good bat-' ting form for Albion. The Suburbs pitcher. Caroline Rennie, did not receive ' the fielding support that she i deserved. Albion went; through its batting order in its third innings. The Albion coach, Mr Jim Gibson, was extremely happy at the manner in which Albion disposed of Suburbs. It was one of Albion’s best performances this season. Albion will play the other zone finalists from Otago, Southland and South Canterbury in Timaru on February 15, tire national final being held at Hutt Valley on March 8.
