Chimp’s firm handshake
PA Nelson A small girl, aged three, has a badly bruised arm after shaking hands with a chimpanzee at Nelson’s Natureland. Niniwa Taia, of Wakefield, climbed the barricade around the cage on Sunday while her mother’s attention was diverted by the antics of nearby otters. The child reached through the cage netting to pat one of the chimpanzees and it grabbed her hand and pulled hard. Onlookers immediately went to the child’s aid and managed to force the muscular animal to release the screaming child. “We turned away for only a few moments. Those who freed her must have moved quickly. We heard the screams and by the time we reached the cage she was already free,” her mother said. “I was told the chimpanzee did not want to let go. It pulled her arm through the netting right up to the shoulder. Her arm is black and blue and a real mess. “Niniwa was terribly shaken ....It just goes to show what can happen when you least expect it,” .
