New Year’s Day is said to be the oldest and most widely-celebrated of all festivals, but it has net always been observed on. January 1, although this date is now recognised as being the official beginning of the yearThis verse describes the spirit of a new year “Every age has deemed the new-born year, The fittest time for fes.tive cheer.” In early Celtic times the new year began on November 1, and in the great days of the Roman Empire it was ushered in on March 1. In Christian times New Year’s Day. in Scotland occurred on, March 25. The Chinese New Year has always been observed on the second new moon after the winter solstice, in late January, or some time in February. In the Christian world the birth of Christ marked
