NZPA-AP Boston Those designed jeans with chic labels and stunning price tags have pew competition from an unexpected quarter: VMbtgie’s,” priced at a thrifty $U53.25 and selling briskly in Boston area Goodwill stores. Nine Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries outlets in Boston have sold about 7000 pairs of used jeans since December, 1979, when they started sewing a bright blue and white “Morgie’s,” patch
on a back pocket, according to a spokesman, Ms Sherry Alpert. Goodwill is a charity organisation. '*■'*'■ Goodwill " had received scores of ~ requests for just' the patch from people who wanted to sew it on to other garments, said Ms Alpert, especially after several television stations had featured stories or how the.patch had achieved a cult status among college students and younger buyers. ‘ “It started off late last year
as a spoof on designer jeans,” >she said. “We were really just looking for a way to help get people into our stores and boost sales of'clothing, since’ sales pay the salaries of ■ handicapped people who work for Goodwill and actually sew the patches on. “It has snowbolled since then, as almost ■ anyone is willing to pick up a pair of designer jeans, no matter who ; the designer is, for $3,251”
