More grants to Green Island
PA Wellington ; The Cabinet, has approved a i grant of $215,000 to the i Green Island Borough Coun-1 cil, the Minister of Local Government, (Mr i Highet) has said. The grant will help the : borough to pay for damage ; from the Abbotsford landslip. 1 Mr Highet has also ap- 1 proved a grant of $50,000 ; from the local authorities’ ; special assistance fund for < the same purpose. i The Minister said he had i always felt the grants were <
justified, but he felt it was best to wait until the Commission of Inquiry into the disaster had reported its findings. “The commission was in no doubt that further funding of the Green Island Borough Council was necessary,” Mr Highet said. The Government has already given almost $477,000 to the borough council, subsidised the public appeal at a cost of $250,000, and Government departments spent more than $lOO,OOO in tine area at the time of the emergency. - ; I • ■
