Sound Wave top prospect in King’s Plate

Special correspondent Auckland

Favouritism for-the Auckland Cup might well be decided at Ellerslie today. A good win in the King’s Plate by Sound Wave would make certain his becoming one of the most-discussed candidates for the big one on Thursday. . The King’s Plate is a 1600 m event and it might seem, by now, to be a long way from Sound Wave’s best distance. But the Te Rapa Horse has never been short of pace and he should not have much trouble keeping the leaders within range. Sound Wave won a 1600 m at Ellerslie on November 26. He has had only one race meanwhile, for a second in the Avondale Cup. Then, last Wednesday, did a trial at Ellerslie that was, to say the least, highly encouraging. Under the weight-for-age conditions of the King’s Plate, Sound Wave will have to carry 58kg and in the cup he has 51kg. There is no rehandicap for winning today’s race so a success , fdr Sound Wave would surely point to a bold showing again on New Year’s Day. River Queen could be expected to make Sound Wave go hard. Some of her best performances have been over this course. Hotrap, if she reproduced her form of two starts back, would certainly go close and Be a Devil, Oranmore. Shelter’s Gold and Pheroz Fortune are others with ability.

None of the others still in the Auckland Cup is in the King’s Plate but the Summer Cup, first leg, over 2200 m, has five cup entries as acceptors — Wren’s Pride, Washington, Bra Hest, Stylemaster and Dad’s Army. Unless the cup field is much reduced by this evening, when a final payment becomes due, Stylemaster and Dad’s Army would probably need to have won this last preliminary race to get a place. And their latest form hardly suggests much chance. Each of the other three could go well. Wren’s pride ran below expectations last time, when eighth in the Avondale Cup, but his two previous runs were encouraging. close behind Ring the Bell for second in the Alison Stakes at Ellerslie then in the Thames Valley Stakes; Bra Hest was only inches away- from third, though placed fifth in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap on Saturday and (Washington, in the same event, ran better than his ninth placing suggests. The winner of the Summer'' Cup Will be liable to rehandicap • for the Auckland Cup, but the amount of penalty would not be much, possibly 1.5 kg.

The second leg will be the Ferguson Handicap, in which China might be the popular fancy. Summer Haze, from Stratford, the Awapuni fly, Full of Grace, Glamour Bay, from Matamata, and Penny Dee, from Cambridge, will try for further points in the Wrightson “Filly of the Year” contest when they meet in the $15,000 Ladies Mile. With this .one and nine further races in the series to be decided, Full of Grace heads the points table with 33.75, Summer Haze is second with 20.25, Glamour Bay Fifth, with 9.5 and Penny Dee has three.
