Powley will be today’s Washdyke attraction

By

J.J. BOYLE

Powley will be the attraction on the second day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at Wash dyke today.

Hector Anderton’s brilliant Noble Bijou filly will dominate thoughts and betting on the $BOOO Show Gate Stakes, and it will be one of the major surprises of the season if she has to bow to one of the other fillies in this 1600 m event of the Broadlands series.

Powley returns today to the scene of her first victory in September. Since then she has made spectacular progress and earned top ranking with her courageous victory in the Nev; Zealand One Thousand

with challenges expected from Flying View, Grand Country’ and In the Clear. Flying View’ was luckless in the running in the Timaru Cup. The handy size of this field should help him to mount an uninterrupted run from behind the leaders. Grand Country finished boldly to . edge out Sharebroker in Saturday’s sprint, and if he is in the same form for today’s _ race he should_go close again. Paddy Beaufort brought a change of luck for the Riccarton stable of Kelvin

Guineas after shaking off the effects of a virus. The Dimple, a talented stablemate of the Timaru Cup winner. The Twinkle, and winner of her last two races, is likely to be the best of Powley’s rivals. Sharebroker, a close second on the first day of the meeting, is one of the obvious chances in the A. J. Parris Handicap, first leg of today’s T.A.B. double. But he will need to come up with one of his best runs from the outside barrier position in the 10-horse field to cope

Quayle in winning on Saturday. He is robust enough to come back for another bold run in the Pukaki Handicap, second leg of today’s T.A.B. double. Goucho and Stead are other Riccarton-trained horses capable of battling into the finish.

Goucho was galloped on in his race at Wingatui on Friday, but the trouble was not serious.

Stead did not get the best of runs when third on the first day at Washdyke.
