Kev’s Boy likely prospect in New Zealand Derby
Special correspondent, Auckland
- Rev’s Boy, for so long the sec. end-string three-year-old of Neville Atkins stable at Waiuku, could come into his own over the 2400 m of the New. Zealand Derby at Ellerslie on Friday. ' - A bay colt bv Skyhawk II from Lady Carlyle. Rev’s Boy .was the third placegetter behind his stablemate, Ring The Bell, and El Casino in the Avondale Guineas when he last raced. Key’s Boy was the best finisher on that occasion, running on Very strongly as he has done most times during his comparatively short racing career. ■ln his two latest attempts before the Avondale race, Revs Bov won a couple of Ellerslie middle-distances, one on December 3, the other on November 22. He looks, all round, a real stayer. ■ Even if some doubt persists of Ring The Bell’s ability to get 2400 m, he continues one of the most respected Derby candidates. For certain; - he Will run prc'.ninently for he is a good beginner able to keep near the pace. Battle Lord, from Ray Verners stable at Takanini, and two visitors, Amyl, trained by Garth Ivil, and Sir Louis, by Merv Andrews and Brent Lewis, of Bulls, are others which help make the Derby field one of the mo?t open in recent years. Auckland Cup hopefuls are on trial in' the Queen' Elizabeth Handicap, the first leg of the double; and some smart sprinters will contest the second leg, the Newmarket Handicap.
A Takanini trio, Assessed, Washington and Bold Display, make plenty of appeal in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap. In the Newmarket, the prospects include Golden Rhapsody and Just A Devil. RACE 6 2.55 p.m.— QUEEN ELIZABETH HANDICAP
