Disabled
Unemployment is hitting disabled people harder than the rest of the workforce, according to “Aid,” the new national magazine for the disabled. The first issue of the magazine refers to the disabled as “the forgotten sector of the unemployed.” It quotes a Wellington employment officer as saying that finding work for the disabled is “like trying, to go uphill on rollerskates.” The magazine is spon;ored by Mr Gary Merrylees, of Auckland, whose son was disabled after a sudden illness at the age
of five. Published by Aid Publishing Society, it is edited by Mr Pat McCarthy. - An introductory article in the first issue said the magazine aimed to provide a channel of communication for people with all types of disabilities. It would try to advance the interests of the disabled as well ”as provide news and information. Although the International Year of Disabled Persons, which will start next year, was an incentive to launch the magazine, "Aid” was intended ' as a continuing
publication. The magazine will be published each month, and the next issue will come out in February.
