Hailstorm ruins apple crop
PA Nelson At least 100.000 cases of apples have been ruined bv'a hailstorm in Nelson. 'The storm swept through the Moutere Valley apple-growing area but the extend of the damage is only now being realised. The Ministry of Agriculture's regional advisory' officer. Mr M. G. Baumgart, said that 100,000 cases of fruit being grown for export markets had been lost. One of the ar-dest-hit growers, Mr Noel Kirk, said he would not be surprised if 500,000 cases had been damaged. The hail damaged 80 to 90 per cent of Mr Kirk’s crop. At this stage of the growing season, Nelson apples are about the size of plums. Apples pockmarked by hail continue to grow’ but the disfigurement disqualifies them from export markets. They can be used, for processing into tinned apple and apple juice but the orchardist’s return is severely reduced.
