Greymouth still on

Special correspondent Greymouth

The Greymouth Jockey Club’s committee decided late yesterday afternoon in sunshine and with a good forecast to race as planned today. The club’s secretary, Mr R. F. Fitzgerald, said the water from recent rain had all receded from the club’s car parks and the track. If the club was forced to postpone today’s meeting it could either abandon one day of the two-day meeting or race on Monday and Wednesday. That was yet to be decided, said Mr R. Williams, the president of the club.

Heavy rain on Thursday evening put the Grey River in flood. Two inches of rain fell in the 24-hour period up until 9 a.m. yesterday morning and the racetrack at Omoto was still being threatened by rising waters at 11 a.m. Part of the track was already' flooded at 8.30 a.m.
