Super Value to open
Many Super Value supermarkets will open for Saturday trading in Christchurch. In a letter to staff, the services manager of G.U.S. Wholesalers, Ltd, Mr J. N. Wilkinson, said that the supermarket chain had been forced into opening by Woolworths’ decision to trade on Saturdays. An opening date could not be given until Woolworths’ - intentions
were clear, but December 13 was a “definite possibility,” Mr Wilkinson said. Super Value will “reluctantly” give . Weolworths a one-week Saturday trading advantage to keep its assurance to staff that it would not be the first to open. It is not yet known how many of the 18 supermarkets will open but it is expected to be a “significant percentage,” according to
Mr Wilkinson. Those that do will open from 9.30 a.m.; to 12.30 p.m. on a three-month trial. • ’No staff would be compelled to work on Saturdays, but any Saturday tvork would be offered to existing staff first, Mr Wilkinson said. The supermarkets would not open on the Christmas and New Year long week-ends, except in New Brighton.
