Date for smelter decision
PA Wellington The Government will be told on December 2 which is the preferred site for the second aluminium smelter. The choice, is between three sites: Tiwai Point near Invercargill, which is the site of Comalco’s Smelter, Aramoana near Dunedin, or Seadown near Timaru. The second smelter will be
! built by a consortium of I Fletcher Holdings, the Australian company CSR, and!] Alusuisse of Switzerland. A Fletcher spokesman said yesterday that the December 2 deadline had been set in the heads of agreement signed with the Government, earlier this year. The consortium had encountered no difficulties in! meeting any of the dead-i lines. , . , , The spokesman said the consortium had already indicated its intention to apply for “fast track" treatment under the National Development Act. But application for the fast track would not be made on December 2 because as soon as a final site had been settled, a detailed environmental impact report must be made. The Health Department is already assessing the possible pollution problems, particularly from fluoride emissions.
