Concern over decision
The Canterbury Women’s Cricket Association is not happv with the organisation of the national second elevens’ tournament, to be played at Auckland from January 11 to January 17. Last year, Canterbury - had its third eleven in the contest, to eliminate the need for a bye. It finished second to tire Canterbury second eleven: This season, a Welsh team will be playing m the competition. , ••We are concerned that young New Zealand cricket-
ers are being denied the chance to compete in the bye position, which could have been .filled by' a team from North Shore, Auckland, or Canterbury” said a spokeswoman for the association.
“The Canterbury third eleven was accepted in the-bye position last season” she said. “While the Canterbury association. accepts the decision of the New Zealand Women’s Cricket Council in the rejection of the application for our third eleven
to compete, we are unhappy about the acceptance of Wales as a competing team, when it. is not affiliated to the New Zealand council.” The Welsh teams: will not be the only women’s side visiting New Zealand this season. There will be a Yorkshire women’s team in Christchurch to play the Canterbury second eleven on December 27 and 28. . The Welsh women will meet a combined team from the Canterbury second and third elevens on January 3 and 4.
