Rents paid by young doctors

Sir, — As I read your report on the raising of doctors’ rents (November 19), the North Canterbury Hospital Board wants to ask permission from the Health Department not vice versa as Geoff Nichol says in his letter (November 21). While I appreciate that doctors work hard, so do nurses and yet student nurses are paying $2l board with no perks. A rise in doctors’ rents would not appear to be unreasonable in view of the fact that their meals are also free while on duty. Perhaps the Health Department could do a deal with Air New Zealand and we and our denendants could get cheaper fares. — Yours, etc., MARY COATS, Nurse. November 21, 1980.
