Electricity charges

Sir, — Commendation is due to the efforts of Rod Eatwell to put into proper perspective the situation in regard to the anomalous electricity pricing in this country (November 20). I recollect that when the 25 per cent reduction was granted to industry only, Mr Eatwell felt inclined to refuse the

concession to which he was entitled unless domestic consumers were similarly given the 25 per cent decrease. Big business is not the answer to inflation if its establishment means such enormous overseas borrowing and also the deprivation of the people who have developed the existing electricity, to the extent that ill health is a common complaint in our cold winters. In the light of Mr Muldoon's comment that the aluminium smelter will not be an employment source: This was evident when TV cameras taken through the tremendous power generation complex for the existing smelter showed clearly that computers were automatically controlling everything. ’ — Yours, etc.,

.L. E. REID. ; November 20, 1980.
