Soviets move more gold to West
NZPA-Reuter Beme The Soviet Union has sent 34 tonnes of gold to Switzerland in the last two months, according to Swiss Customs statistics.
So far this year the Soviet Union, the world’s second biggest producer of newlymined gold, has sold hardly any on the Zurich market, which has traditionally been its preferred outlet. The dealers said they had detected no selling of the! fresh supplies yet, but it seemed likely that they would eventually come on to the market. They believed the Russians had sold gold in recent weeks in New York and elsewhere, possibly to raise foreign exchange to buy grain after this year’s poor harvest. Total Soviet sales this year were almost certain to be far below the 230 tonnes sold last year and the 410 tonnes marketed in 1978.
