Air-conditioning blamed
NZPA Brisbane Air-conditioning in Australia was affecting the performance of the New Zealand cricketers, said the tour manager, Mr lan Taylor yesterday. Mr Taylo.- said that the majority of the 16 cricketers at present in Brisbane were suffering from throat infections, believed to have stemmed from the air-conditioning. Mr Taylor also said that medical opinion suggested injuries to the captain, Geoff Howarth, and the
fast bowler, Gary Troup, also resulted from air-con-ditioning. “Medical advice has said that going from air-condi-tioned rooms into hot, humid weather can have a detrimental effect to muscle action,” he said. Howarth has been sidelined by a nagging groin injury since arriving in Australia two weeks ago. He was forced to withdraw from the present match against Queensland in Brisbane, but Mr Taylor said yesterday that the New Zealand captain was
hopeful of playing In a New South Wales Country match next week. “We have to have the air-conditioning on here in Brisbane although -there has been some discussion about putting up with the hot weather and' leaving the air’-conditioriing off,” Mr Taylor said. Troup strained a muscle in the side of his back bowling against Queensland on Friday. Mr Taylor said that his players had had no difficulty in adjusting to the harder Australian grounds.
