Hadlee blasts N.Z. to big total
NZPA' Brisbane Richard Hadlee, the New Zealand all-rounder, stole the limelight again at the Brisbane Cricket Ground yesterday with a blazing century the Queenslanders were powerless to stop. New Zealand, written off in many quarters as no real threat to Australia, went on to a mammoth 461 for eight declared in its second innings to lead over all by 451 runs.
Hadlee flogged the Queensland attack, including the test hopefuls, Jeff Thomson and Geoff Dymock, to finish with 103 in a hardhitting display that had the crowd cheering throughout. On Saturday Hadlee took advantage of a green-topped pitch to sweep through the Queensland batting line-up and numbered Greg Chappell for a duck among his five wickets.
Hadlee’s handling of the fast bowler, Jeff Thomson, yesterday was particularly impressive, forcing the Queensland speedster to bowl short to a tightly-pack-ed leg field. Thomson probably dashed his test chances, bowling 21 no balls, most with the second hew ball, when his captain, Chappell, was looking for a vital breakthrough.
At that stage, Queensland was in a position to exert pressure, but Hadlee’s powerful hitting put the Home team on the defensive. The New Zealand all-roun-der’s chanceless 100, the fastest in Brisbane for many years, came up from only 77 balls in 90 minutes and spark-
led with 14 fours and three sixes as he tore into the Queensland attack. Hadlee’s century became a formality as he raced through the 80s and 90s with a series of boundaries, bringing up the' 100 with a huge six. “It was probably my best innings, even better than the 100 against the West Indies in Christchurch last season,” said Hadlee. “You can say I’m belligerent. I prefer to go after things instead of waiting for them to happen.” Hadlee and Jeremy Coney blasted a seventh-wicket partnership of 159 in 99 minutes, with Coney the last man out at 96. Earlier, the openers, John Wright (78) and Bruce Edgar (51), earned the right to take
on Australia's test attack in a fortnight with a solid stand of 132. It took a brilliant throw by Geoff Dymock from midon to break the partnership when he hit the stumps
from side-on with the stretching Edgar, 51, short of his crease.
Wright fell to a slips’ catch at 78 before the No. 3 batsman, Paul McEwan, took a significant step towards a first test place with a stylish 73 that halted the Queenslanders who had broken through to take three wickets in quick Succession. The Queensland ’ openers, Kepler 1 Wessels and Martin Kent, safely saw out the final 20 minutes in failing light and the home team goes into the fourth and final day today needing 445 runs to win the match with all wickets standing. The Queensland captain, Greg Chappell, later . explained the reason for "Iliomson’s uncontrolled spate of no balls.
