Exciting finish in axemen’s race
An exciting finish to the inter-island race was one of the highlights of the New Zealand woodchopping and sawing championships held at Ferrymead at the weekend. The event, which was run as a relay with five different positions involved, was won by the North Island by six blows after the team had trailed the South by almost half a block at half-way. The teams were:
North Island: J. Bentley and N, Dickinson (Wairarapa), doublehand saw; D. Hohneck (Rotorua), underhand chop; M. Hughes (Tokoroa), standing chop. R. Edwards (Opotiki), underhand chop; and L- Bolstad (Rotorua), standing chop. South Island: G. Hogg (Southland) and J. Rogers (Canterbury); W. Curtain (Canterbury); L. Gilsenan (Rangiora); G. Hocquard (Blenheim); and M. Carran (Southland). Most, of the individual championships had very close finishes. Sonny Bolstad (Rotua) and Mike Carran (Southland) dead-heated for first in the 300nim underhand chop.
i Carran proved the “iron man” of the championships arid was consistently placed in most events.
The championships should have been a valuable guide to the national selectors who will choose a New Zealand team to compete against Australia at Raglan on December 30. Results were:
