Athletes for Games trials
Nineteen athletes have been named by the Canterbury track and field selectors (Messrs Valdemars Briedis, Bob Grieve, and Bruce Milne) for the Pacific Conference Games trials at Auckland on December 13 and 14. Another 18 have had their names offered for consideration to the New’ Zealand selectors, who will decide the final composition of the fields for the trials. The biggest surprise among the athletes in the top category is the inclusion of the New Zealand women’s javelin champion, Nola Perkins. She has been in Australia since her national success and little is known of her performances. Indeed, nobody even seems to know
whether she is available for the Pacific Games. Another included on past performance is Joe Leota, who was among New Zealand’s top sprinters until injury halted his progress. He has done little of note so far this summer, but has high hopes of regaining his best form in time for the trials. Martin Couldwell, the Commonwealth Games steeplechase representative, is another included on reputation. He has been overseas for the last six months. The youngest athlete to be included in the top category is Angela Pule, aged 16, who will contest the high jump and the 100 m hurdles. The 19 athletes in the top category, who will all
have their travelling costs met, are:—
Meh.— J. Leota (100 m and 200 in), A. Gill (400 m A. Stark (800 m and 1500 m), R. Goldstone (80(hn), M Gilchrist (800 m and 1500 m), M. Couldwell (5000 m and 3000 m steeplechase), A.
