Selectors bat eyelids
NZPA London The South African cricketer, Clive Rice, one of the world’s top allrounders, has fallen foul of authorities by posing naked in a newspaper advertisement for sports equipment, the “Daily Telegraph” reported in London.
The “Telegraph’s” Johannesburg correspondent, Ray Kennedy, reported
that Rice was pictured with only a St Christopher’s medal around his neck and a bat strategically held. He had been strongly tipped to succeed David Dyer to the captaincy of Transvaal, the champion provincial team, but the report quoted a Transvaal selector as saying: “We cannot have a captain behaving irresponsibly.”
Transvaal Cricket Council officials believe that Rice, who captains Not-
tinghamshire in the English county championship, is deliberately behaving provocatively to create a “rebel” image in the interests of his endorsement contracts, according to the report.
Rice is' apparently unconcerned by the row. “They removed the word ‘jumbo’ from the bat. I wonder why?” he said. “The trouble with the game in this country is that everybody is far too conservative.”
