School vandalism
Sir, — What Ross Lindsav savs (November 6) is good sense, and I acknowledge it without mockery. Readers will note that we are, and always have been, in substantial agreement. Certain questions, however, remain unanswered. I shall try to renhrase them in simpler words. If the whip, the cane, and the strap are to be used at all. would your “bash to basics” correspondents be happy if I used exactly those “behaviour modification techniques” on them? I think not. Do your correspondents offer violence and threats, and the infliction of pain, to any person physically biester than themselves? I think not. In those comers of the world where corporal punishment Uneers on (Arabia, Uganda. Turkev. some New Zealand schools) is it "discreet.” “consistent,” and “fair”? I think not. Is it “effective”? I think the deafening silence will continue. — Yours, etc.. ken McAllister. November 6, 1980.
