Japan sets beef quotas
NZPA-Reuter Tokyo Japan has set its beef import quota for the second half (October to March) of the financial year 1980 at 62,800 tonnes, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has announced. The half-year import quota designed to meet Japanese demand in the January-June period of next year has been sent to all beef-exporting countries including Australia, the United States, and New Zealand, it said. The total quota comprised 55,000 tonnes for general consumer use and 7800 tonnes for special use including hotels and restaurants, the Ministry said. This compared with 64,000 and 8000 tonnes respectively in the first half (April to September) and 53.500 and 8800 tonnes in the second half of the 1979 year. Japan’s beef import quota -in the 1979 year amounted to a ; record 134.500 tonnes.
