No merger talks by Watties
PA Wellington ( The chairman of Watties ' Industries (Mr D. F. . McLeod) denied yesterday ' that the Hastings-based group is having merger talks with anyone. :, The denial was telephoned!, to NZPA by a company I' spokesman. "The company is|j not involved in any merger talks at all — with the
Goodman group or anyone else,” Mr McLeod said. The statement came after a newspaper report from Hastings saying that stock; market speculation that a major New Zealand com-l pany group had been bulk-} buying Wattie Industries! shares could not be confirmed. - j The Wellington-based Goodman, Group had been tipped by one source as the mystery buyer, but spokesmen for the group denied the rumour, the report said. Wattie Industries and the
Goodman Group are .in-' volved in joint ownership of United Bakeries, Ltd,. a sl.s| million new Auckland pany, and the spokesmen claim the rumours stem from this involvement.
The Hastings report said that Mr McLeod would not comment on the rumour that there had been volume buying of Wattie shares by an outside group.
