‘West must catch up’

NZPA-Reuter West Berlin General Bernard Rogers, supreme commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said yesterday, the West must work hard to cut back Soviet military superiority and guarantee peace. General, Rogers told a news conference military and political efforts were essential to ensure peace in the next 10 years. The next five years would be. the most critical in the history of the alliance, he added. General Rogers, who had earlier addressed the United States Chamber of Commerce in West Berlin, said Soviet military superiority was growing despite Western efforts. The West must not let the gap get too big to be closed, he said. General Rogers said that various factors had contributed to the present military situation. These included the continuing decline of the West’s nuclear capability compared ■ with that of the Soviet Union, the growth of Soviet military strength, and the outbreak of wars and unrest in important areas outside l Europe.
