British jobless up again
NZPA-Reuter London Britain’s record number of unemployed, already higher than at any time since the great depression- of ■ the 19305, has risen to 8,5 per cent of the work force, according to Government statistics published yesterday.
They showed that the total number of jobless had swollen to 2,062,866 this month, compared with 2,039,476 in September (8.4 per cent of the workforce). The figures coincided with publication of a joint statement by the Opposition Labour Party and the Trades Union Congress calling on the Conservative Government to take emergency measures to reduce unemployment. Meanwhile, the car-making giant, Vauxhall, has put 4000 workers on to a oneday week. The assembly-line workers at Luton, Bedfordshire, have been on a two-day week for five weeks.
A company spokesman said: “The wo |:ers’were told it was necessary because of the continuing down-trend of the market. They have been quite sympathetic about our. problems and the problems facing the industry in general.”
