Rare parrots seized
PA Auckland Customs’ officers in Auckland have seized 16 Tongan parrots which could fetch up to $lOO9 a pair on the New Zealand market. The rare birds, from the island of Eua, were confiscated aboard the Frysna. ■ Mr M. G. Howley, deputy "collector jof customs in •'Auckland/, said the illegal ■entry df birds-was of very -serious'concern, about 10 years’ago but then seemed to die down. 5 - “But we have evidence
that there has been an increase in this type of activity,”, he said. Because the birds were so rare they could “fetch a considerable price” on the New Zealand market. The Ministry of Agricul-, ture was concerned about' birds being illegally -imported and the Customs Department was considering prosecution.
