Ice-cold droplets of water being sprayed into the airstream entering an engine of British Aerospace’s new BAE 146 aircraft during a test of the engine’s anti-icing system. At a temperature of minus 30 degrees Celsius, the droplet feed creates conditions the aircraft will encounter in cloud at an altitude of 25,000 feet. The new anti-icing system involves heating the intake lip of the engine with hot air from the engine compressor.
