Fires at two tips
Christchurch firemen were still fighting a rubbish tip fire on the outskirts of the city early, this morning. The fife .broke out. at the Halswell Junction Road dump about midday and was still burping well after midnight.
About 11 p.m. it was thought the (blaze , was under control and the firefighters returned to their base, but were immediately called bac kto the dump. The fire had erupted in a different place and now extended more than 30 metres at its face.
One; appliance from the
Sockbum station and a bulldozer initially attended. At 12.30 p.m. the men radioed back to headquarters for another bulldozer.
An appliance from the Spreydon station was called out to another rubbish fire at |he McTeigue Road tip, near Wigram air base, which started soon after 8 p.m. This ; fire was extinguished about midnight. • . A Fire Service spokesman said that firemen were hampered by the dangers of moving on seemingly solid ground which might be undermined by burning refuse. <;
