Shipping News Phosphate carrier on first visit
Scheduled to arrive in Lyttelton today from Bluff while on her first visit to New Zealand is the 14.926ton bulk carrier Gem bringing 5750 tonnes of bulk phosphate from Florida. The Gem was built in Japan, is * owned by the Buckeye Shipping Corporation of Liberia, chartered by the Norwegian Jebsens Line, under the agency of the British Phosphate Commission, and under the command of an Italian captain, making her somewhat of a floating United Nations. After discharging her cargo of phosphate at Lyttelton the Gem, built in 1977, will proceed to Fiji where she will take on about 25,000 tonnes of sugar for the United States. She is one of the modern classes of bulk carriers, equipped with five 15-tonne cranes to work her six holds. She is expected to remain at Lyttelton about 48 hours.
The Gem is 172 m long, has a beam of 23m, ano when fully laden has a maximum summer draught of 9.5 m. She is powered by a single six-cylinder Mitsubishi engine which develops a maximum shaft drive of 11,400 brake horsepower. Her normal cruising speed is about 15 knots. ARRIVALS Nil.
