Women oppose peace jog

PA Wellington Some New Zealand women are against the Government’s idea that they jog throughout New Zealand carrying a peace petition as part of the celebration of the United Nation’s Decade for Women.

In place of the peace petition the ogranisation wanted one against discrimination, against women linked with their reproductive role and if the Government went ahead with its present plans, women’s groups would turn the occasion into an outright protest. The Women’s National Abortion Action Campaign in a statement yesterday said it was “an insult to the women’s movement.”

They said they were disappointed that the Government spokesman on women, Mr McLay, and Miss Marilyn Waring, the member of Parliament for Waipa, countenanced the scheme, as their Government had done little for women.

“They refuse to support our right to abortion and to educate young people for responsible sexual activity.” The statement acknowledged that peace was a noble ideal, but asking women to take responsibility for promoting peace was part of the same “sexist thinking” that said women were best suited to take exclusive care of children and chastity.
