Clothing charges remands

A man charged with stealing women's underwear, to a total value of $24,247, over a period of 18 months, has elected trial by jury. The defendant, an unemployed company manager, was yesterday remanded by Judge Fraser in the District Court on bail of $BOOO to November 24 for the taking of depositions. At the request of counsel (Mr D. I. Jones) continuation of the interim suppression of the defendant’s name was granted.

The defendant is alleged to have stolen the clothing from his former employer. He is also charged with receiving a pair of women's shoes, valued at $49, on or about August 25. No pleas were entered and the defendant. was; allowed bail of $4OOO together with a surety of the same amount. He was also ordered to report daily to the police. Interim suppression was also continued for a former supervisor, employed by another firm, who admitted

a charge of receiving assorted women's underwear, to a total value of $375, from the previous defeftdant, between September, 1978, and last month. This defendant; also represented by Mr Jones, also admitted stealing five pairs of children's shoes and six ■ pairs of women’s shoes, to a i total value of $lll. the property of his employer, between April and November, last year. Sergeant M. P. Caldwell said that when police executed search warrants at the defendant’s home they found the shoes and a quantity of women’s night attire. The defendant had told the police that he had come to an arrangement with a cooffender that he would sell the stolen property and the two of them would share the

proceeds. He had received about $5OO from the nightwear sales. The defendant said the arrangement was such an easy way to obtain cash that, he became greedy. ‘He was convicted and remanded on bail of $lOOO to i November 3 for a probation ; report and sentence. 19 CHARGES ’ A man facing 19 charges of ! fraud and forgery, involving was remanded to Deicember 4 for a defended i hearing. Pau! Martin Carroll, aged 21. an apprentice toolmaker, was allowed bail of $lOOO together with a surety of the same amount. Carroll, who pleaded not guilty to all 19 charges, is alleged to have committed the offences between July and September.
