Settlement in wool industry awards
PA Auckland The settlement of an award between wool industry employers and three unions has averted the threat to New Zealand’s wool exports. Until the award talks began last week wool shipments valued at $2O million were in jeopardy because of a series of loadout bans and strikes by woolstore workers in Auckland and Christchurch. Normal work resumed last week when the award talks began in Christchurch. The president of the Wool Brokers’ Association (Mr M. Harkness) said yesterday
that ■ there had been an agreement between the par* ties for a 13.75 per cent increase to wool classers and woolstore workers. In addition, woolstore workers would receive a 1.25 per cent increase as a relativity catch-up. Employees working containers would receive an extra $3 a day. The unions covered by the award, which comes into effect on December 12, are the Federation of Storemen and Packers, the southern branch of the Labourers’ Union, and the northern industrial district section of the Storemen and Packers’ Union.
