Scanner appeal raises at least $1.6M
PA Dunedin The people of Otago and Southland had raised $1,623 million when the body scanner appeal closed at 9 a.m. yesterday. An. order for - the scanner will be placed on Wednesday. - The total represents $5.60 for every - man. woman, and child in' the appeal region, or $517 for every hour of the appeal since it was launched in June.
The amount raised in the three-station radio appeal that climaxed the fund-rais-ing yesterday stood at $322,341 by 9 p.rq. The radio appeal began at
6 a?m. and donations poured ih throughout the day. Donations came from as far as London, and from Campbell Islandand many parts of the North Island. . "The result speaks for itself," said the appeal chairman, Mr R. Walls. “Otago and Southland have done better than the first nationwide telethon.” The total of $1,625 million is provisional. Many smaller events, pledges made after, the appeal officially closed, and funds ; - (torn farmers pledging ' lambs for the appeal when .the killing season starts, have yfct to be added.-
