Rally disrupted
NZPA-Reuter Bombay The police arrested 100 protesters on Saturday after dragging them off Aurangabad’s streets to clear the way for India’s first car rally. The demonstrators held up several cars and smashed the window panes of an Opel Ascoma driven by Kenyan ace, Shekhar Mehta, three times winner of the Kenyan Safari. The hold up put Mehta,,
rated highly to win the rally, behind West Germany’s Achim Warmbold who sped past the demonstrators to reach the check post first. Aurangabad city in western India was the end of the first 935 km leg of the rally which student demonstrators said was a waste of valuable fuel and money. The 74 cars entered in the event will travel across mountains, jungles and deserts on the tough 5300 km journey.
