Barrett, Sue top ’lifters at N.Z. championships
PA Whangarei Aucklanders Rory Barrett and Philip Sue, who are to compete in an international contest in Honolulu later this month, were the outstanding competitors in the New Zealand weightlifting championships in Whangarei on Saturday. ■ Barrett took the 100 kg class title with a total of 300 kg, while Sue triumphed in the 75kg class with a total of 280 kg.
. Although both won with something in hand, they had to ward off initial challengers from Robert Ing, of Canterbury, and Mike Bernard, of Auckland, respectively. Outstanding among a promising group of Nelson lifters was Philip Chappell who, when taking the 56kg class, set New Zealand junior records for the snatch, the clean and jerk and the total lift. Chappell also Becom-
plished the unusual feat of lifting more than twice his body weight in the clean and jerk.
