Air New Zealand
Sir, — I read with concern in your columns that Air New Zealand is experiencing difficulties in finding the $900,000,000 needed to buy the five new aeroplanes it would like to fly' us about in. To me, however, the answer is clear. Recently Air New Zealand saved itself $450,000 a year -by cancelling the Westport to Nelson flight If such vast economies can be made on such sparsely patronised services, imagine the savings possible on the flights.- between major centres! By my calculations, our airline would
only need to cancel all flights between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch for the space of three yeare to gain the necessary revenue for its new jumbos. . . And further sir, by cancelling all Air New Zealand flights, both internal and international, for another three years and a half, the airline could also save enough to pay the $940,000,000 interest on its $900,000,000 loan! — Yours etC ” PETER R. HAWES. October 17, 1980.
