Child care
Sir, — I support the stater ments of Dr G. A. Wall (“The Press,” October 15). I agree with him that child care is no substitute for parental care in the first five years; that a child needs'.the continual security that comes from not being separated unduly from its parents. Some authorities on child study (e.g. Dr Humberto Nagera, University of Michigan) caution against around-the-clock, or even 12hour care centres, which raise the prospect of multiple caretakers for the child. Instead, a young child constantly needs a single main mother figure. The happiest women are those who accept the challenge to go along with the special needs and sacrifices of early motherhood. Dr Penelope Leach (British child care authority) is now encouraging mothers to stay at home and mind their own children, a task which she calls “a highly involving and creative business.” — Yours, etc.,
(Mrs) H. J. CRAWFORD. October 16, 1980.
