Fiji sacks rugby men

After its terrible tour of New Zealand in the last two months, it comes as no surprise that the Fijian rugby team no longer has Pita Kewa as captain nor Vilikesa Mocelutu as coach. Both leaders have been dropped from the party to tour Argentina next month. Kewa, who is 36, and Mocelutu, a year younger, failed to inspire the side in New Zealand, and it flopped to eight defeats in 12 matches. Eight other players from the New Zealand tour party will also miss the trip to Argentina. Among them is

Fiji’s most experienced back, Wame Gavidi, who is still troubled by a hamstring injury. The veteran Kewa has been replaced as captain by Samisoni Viriviri, a 26-year-old half-back who has been in the international side for four years. Mocelutu’s successor as. coach is Ilaitia Tuisese, a beanpole of a second row forward who twice toured New Zealand. He was one of Fiji’s best forwards in recent years; now he faces a giant-sized task as coach.
