Safety at Barfield
The road habits of pupils and teachers, and a gymnasium that has not yet been built, fuelled a debate on road safety. outside the Darfield High School, when the Malvern County Council met on Friday. Cyclists riding two or three abreast had caused problems, and it would not be long before there was a serious accident on the road, said Cr A. D. H. Scott. School buses had difficulty travelling on the road when there was heavy cycle traffic and the situation was
compounded by teachers parking their cars outside the school. Cr Scott said that the pupils were “undisciplined.”
Cr E. M.- Frew wanted a sub-committee established, drawing members from the Darfield Community Council, the high school, and the council, to investigate the safety problems. “The kerbing and channelling work (a project almost finished) will not solve the problem,” he said. A gymnasium has been
approved for the high school but Cr Frew said that it was “crazy” that such a complex was to be built when no provision had been made for off-street.. parking. Traffic would be “spilling out on to the street,” he said.
The recommendation for a sub-committee was abandoned in favour of the community council's proposal to wait three weeks, when work on the kerbing would Be finished, and a proper review could be made of the situation.
