Flattery in short-list

Paul Flattery, almost certainly the most improved senior in New Zealand road cycling, has received recognition at the top level. At the conclusion of the Healing national championships in Wanganui, Flattery was named in a short-list for next year’s Oceania Games road team.

The others are the established men, Roger Sumich (Auckland), Steve Cox, Jack Swart (both Waikato-Bay of Plenty) and Vern Hanaray (East Coast-North Island); while another relatively new face is that of Chris Harding (Auckland). In naming the squad, the

selectors (Messrs .G. W. Sharrock, J. W. Broome and G. Sycamore) have omitted the track specialist, Anthony Cuff; and also Blair Stockwell (Canterbury) and Wayne Perkinson (Auckland), who finished ahead of Flattery’s fifth and Harding’s seventh in the championship. However, the latter was a powerful performer for Auckland in the 100 km team time trial championship, and the selectors may well be looking further ahead, to the Brisbane Commonwealth Games in 1982, when / the team time trial will be on the programme.
