Bait catches improve
Greymouth reporter Better weather meant that whitebaiters on the Grey River yesterday had one of the better mornings of the season. Catches varied, but one observer noted that most appeared to have sufficent for a meal. Further north, good catches had been reported on the Pororari River, near Punakaiki. The first month of the season was disastrous, particularly in South Westland, where one buyer who normally would have bought more than a tonne in September handled only a few kilograms. Because of the poor start, the member of Parliament for the West Coast (Mr T. K. Burke) will ask the Minister of Fisheries (Mr Mclntyre) to consider extending the season a month past its normal closing on November 30.
