Forest and Bird Society aims
Sir, • —I am pleased to be reassured by Miss Leila Cullen (October 3), that the majority of Forest and Bird Society members are reasonable people concerned with the protection .of native flora and fauna. This is not too far removed from the policy of the Deerstalkers’ Association, which however, also recognises the value to all of introduced animals and plants, provided they are kept within safe limits. Some antagonism has been caused by criticism of our. motives and L had the impression that my previous remarks referred to a minority (albeit vociferous) of society members, who apparently see a New Zealand unmodified by the presence of man and his works as a desirable state. If I was too sweeping in my opposition, I am sorry, as I am acquainted with several members of the society and both our organisations are in the business of conservation. — Yours, etc.,
W. H. CARTER. October 5, 1980.
